Hard Water Spots in Houston Homes: How to Clean & Prevent Them
Houston and its suburbs have notably hard water — high in dissolved calcium and magnesium. As that water evaporates it leaves chalky white mineral spots on glass, chrome, and tile. It's cosmetic, not dangerous, but it builds up fast on shower doors, faucets, and sinks and makes a clean bathroom look dingy. Here's how to deal with it.
Where hard-water buildup shows up
- Glass shower doors — the most common spot; spotting and a hazy film.
- Faucets, showerheads, and chrome fixtures — white crust around bases and nozzles.
- Sinks, tubs, and tile — water rings and dulled surfaces.
- Dishwasher and glassware — cloudy residue.
- Windows exposed to sprinklers — exterior spotting.
How to remove hard-water spots
Mild mineral deposits respond to a gentle acidic cleaner — white vinegar diluted with water, or a dedicated calcium/lime remover — applied, given a few minutes of dwell time, then scrubbed with a non-scratch pad and rinsed. Heavier buildup may need repeated passes. A few cautions for Houston homes:
- Avoid acidic cleaners on natural stone (marble, travertine) and some specialty finishes — they etch. Use a stone-safe product instead.
- Test on a small area first, and never mix cleaning chemicals.
- For glass, a squeegee after every shower is the single best prevention.
How regular cleaning keeps it away
The reason hard water becomes a visible problem is buildup over time. Consistent cleaning removes mineral residue before it bonds and hardens. Our deep cleans tackle accumulated hard-water film on glass and fixtures, and our recurring visits keep it from returning — we treat glass, chrome, and tile every visit and dry them to prevent new spotting. This is one reason bi-weekly service is so popular in Sugar Land, Katy, and other suburbs where the water is especially hard.
Homeowner options beyond cleaning
If hard water is a constant battle, some homeowners install a whole-home water softener — that's a plumbing upgrade, separate from cleaning, but it reduces buildup at the source. We don't install systems; we keep your surfaces clear in the meantime.
